Flying to Italy...

Once You're in Italy...

Finally, Once You're in Rimini...

Flying to Italy

Flying from outside of Europe - Connections in Europe

The first thing that you’re likely to discover is that Rimini doesn’t have a large international airport. If you’re flying, you’re going to have to make connections. Flights from outside of Europe will likely require at least one connection in Europe, although there are direct flights from the US to Milan, Rome, and Florence.

Airport Hubs in Italy

The airports listed below are: Rimini (RMI), Bologna (BLQ), Milan (MXP) and (LIN), Milan Orio al Serio (BGY), Venice (VCE), Rome (FCO), and Florence (FLR).

Rimini (RMI) aka the "Federico Fellini" Airport

Rimini does indeed have its own airport! There are no long-haul flights to/from the US, but here are some airports within Europe that connect to Rimini.

  • London (Stansted / Gatwick / Heathrow) — STN / LGW / LHR
  • Vienna — VIE
  • Budapest — BUD
  • Kraków — KRK
  • Tirana — TIA
  • Luxembourg — LUX
  • Barcelona — BCN
  • Basel — BSL
  • Palermo — PMO
  • Prague — PRG
  • Kaunas — KUN
  • Warsaw — WAW / WMI
  • Sofia — SOF
  • Catania — CTA
  • Cagliari — CAG

Bolonga (BLQ)

Bologna is a smaller airport but it is the closest major city to Rimini that has many connections for international flights.

If you're coming from the US, there are no direct flights to Bologna. This means that you'll have to make a connection in Europe before arriving in Bologna. Frankfurt, Munich, Madrid, London, Amsterdam, Paris and other major European hubs offer connecting flight to Bologna.

Once in Bologna, Rimini is about 1.5 hours via train and similar via car. If you're coming from Europe, Bologna offers plenty of flights to other major European cities.

Milan (MXP) and (LIN)

There are two airports in Milan.

  • Milano Malpensa (MXP) is a very large, international hub. There are direct flights from the US to Milano Malpensa.
  • Milano Linate (LIN) is a smaller airport, however it is closer to the center of Milan. It does offer some international flights, but no direct flights to/from the US.

Both of the airports in Milan are not centrally located, so if you fly to Milan and you're planning on taking a train to Rimini, you will then need to get transportation from the airport to one of Milan's main train stations.

There are direct trains from Milan to Rimini, but there are also many routes with one or more connections.

Milan Orio al Serio (BGY)

This is another option that is close to Milan, but actually in the city of Bergamo. There are busses that connect this airport to the Milano Centrale Train station. (LINK FOR BUS FROM ORIO AL SERIO TO MILANO CENTRALE).

Venice (VCE)

Venice has a small airport and would obviously add a nice side visit to your trip. There are even a few long-haul flights to/from the US to Venice!

There are direct trains from Venice to Rimini.

Rome (FCO) aka the "Leonardo da Vinci Airport"

The main airport in Rome is the Roma Fiumicino Airport (FCO). Travel time from Rome to Rimini will be long. The fastest way would likely be traveling by bus or car/taxi. If you plan on driving from Rome to Rimini, the drive is about 4.5 hours so you should probably give yourself at least one day in Rome to rest before driving to Rimini.

Similar to Milan, Rome (FCO) is not centrally located and there are trains that link the airport to the two main train stations in Rome. There are no direct trains from Rome to Rimini. All routes require at least one connection.

Florence (FLR)

The Florence airport is small, similar to Bologna.

There are no direct train connections from Florence to Rimini. The fastest routes require a change in Bologna.

There is a tram connection from the airport to the Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station (you must exit the tram at the UNITÀ stop. LINK TO TRAM SITE.
